Artists as city makers: the timeline of Kaus Australis
Artists have long played a crucial role in Rotterdam’s cultural development as makers and city makers. Kaus Australis is a telling example of how artists literally create space for art. In 1993, the artists took the initiative to develop a DIY model ands commissioned and partly built the facility themselves. The booming real estate market is now putting Kaus Australis under pressure, and they have been ordered to dismantle the building. What impact will current real estate policies have on Rotterdam as home for makers? We raise these questions in a small exhibition about Kaus Australis and a timeline in which we map the developments and turning points in the city with various guests in the coming months. At this event, Kamiel Verschuren and Anke Bangma present their contribution to the timeline, and we invite you to an informal discussion.
