Mariska van den Berg and Katarina Jazbec cordially invite you to a listening session and film screening on Sunday, January 18th at TENT. Speaking in Nettle Hairs (2026) is a 30-minute documentary by Katarina Jazbec about the summer harvest of nettles and rope making in Essenburgpark, an urban nature reserve in Rotterdam-West. Katarina investigates the habitats of nettles, black alders, Frankia bacteria, and the communities involved, including park volunteers, former Dutch-Turkish gardeners, a biologist, and a forest ranger. The film marks the beginning of a long-term artistic investigation into nettles and the Dutch nitrogen crisis, shifting the focus from urban to rural environments. The film was made possible by CBK Rotterdam I&V and Mondriaan Kunstenaars Basis.
Kantelen is a podcast by Mariska van den Berg in which artists and filmmakers explore how our perspective on the world can shift. Not by focusing on grand theories, but by observing attentively, developing an eye for non-human worlds, and connecting with them. Throughout each episode, the question of our human place in the bigger picture plays a recurring theme.
In Tilting #2, we spent a day in Essenburg Park with Katarina, researching her new film. In this small patch of urban nature, near her home, she explores how to reconnect with the land. We also listen to excerpts from her film You Can't Automate Me (2021) and discuss the importance of storytelling. In this time of ecological disruption, the question is: how can we tell stories that expand our imagination of what's possible?
After the listening session and the film screening, Mariska van den Berg and Katarina Jazbec will engage in a conversation with each other and the audience. Central to the discussion will be the question: what do we need to live together in a more-than-human way?
