The Summer Salon put unknown talent, established artists and ambitious amateur artists from Rotterdam South in the spotlight. With this project, CBK Rotterdam and TENT wanted to make the scope of creativity in South visible, following the example of the famous 19th century Paris Salon, in which painters and sculptors could make a name for themselves every year.
Following an open call, professional practitioners and amateur artists were able to submit work for the summer exhibition. A jury consisting of director of Museum Rotterdam Hans Walgenbach and artists Hidde van Schie and Gil & Moti selected the works for the exhibition that they found representative of the beauty, expression and creativity that can be found in Zuid.
The works exhibited in Het Gemaal also had a chance to win a prize, which consisted of a follow-up exhibition at CBK Rotterdam on the Nieuwe Binnenweg. Photographer Jeanette Melsen, graphic artist Thijs Lansbergen and video artist Marco Douma were selected for this, with Lansbergen ultimately winning.
The exhibition was organised in collaboration with SBAW Cultuurscouts.
