Every Picture Tells A Story focused on the rediscovery of painting as a 'new medium' in the digital age. Narrative and reproducibility are the foundations on which the digital age is built. The moving image is endlessly repeated on the internet, YouTube, smartphone, iPhone, iPad, Ebook. And yet, at the same time, a large number of artists seemed to be gripped by painting again, by the unique and unrepeatable moment when the paint touches the canvas.
The exhibition wanted to make visible the renewed love for painting among a growing group of artists. At first glance, the fifteen artists presented did not have much in common. They differ in style, intention, age and background. Yet they are connected in their quest to reformulate the basic principles of painting. However autonomous, however abstract or figurative: each work presents views and opinions on the importance of the unique gesture, the emphasis on the physical experience, the potential of the craft, the power of virtuosity.
The painters hardly see their work as part of a movement, development or group. Rather, they seem to regard it as an individual necessity to place the painting in a position where it is free and independent, and can function free from social, political and art historical baggage.
