Filmmaker Nanouk Leopold and visual artist Daan Emmen develop video installations together in which they experiment with film as a spatial experience. In TENT, the duo builds the kaleidoscopic installation triptych, in which equal roles are assigned to the characters in the films, the space in which they move and the architectural sets in which the viewer moves.
The works that Leopold Emmen in TENT together into a layered total experience, are the result of a special collaboration with choreographer Meg Stuart and actress Sandra Hüller. During improvisations on location, each in their own way, through beautiful play with body language and facial expressions, depicted the motif of the end and beginning of a love relationship.
The highly visual film style places equal focus on the characters and their surroundings. Subcutaneous emotions surface through the ways in which the characters explore their place in space. Walls, ceiling, floor, curtains and furniture form boundaries, obstacles and voids that confront the characters with the situation and state of mind in which they find themselves. The rooms become a mirror for their inner world, strange and intuitively recognizable at the same time.
The sculptural installations in which Leopold Emmen embeds their film scenes extend the cinematic experience into the space of the spectator. As a viewer, you are invited to move between the film scenes and sound fragments and to sharpen your senses to the sight lines, strange spatial proportions, textures and domestic details. The way in which Leopold Emmen distributes these elements across three settings offers you as a spectator the opportunity to appeal to your imagination and construct your own story.
This is the Dutch premiere and further development of the project Another Woman that Leopold Emmen produced in 2022 in collaboration with the Schauspielhaus Bochum.
