The film installation 'An Invitation to Dance' is the result of a study into the cinematic experience of dance. Filmmaker Noud Heerkens entered into a special collaboration with choreographer Loïc Perela. He created a cross-pollination between dance, cinema and technology, in which the dancers on the screen and the moving body of the viewer enter into a relationship.
In 'An Invitation to DANCE' there is no environment, no notion of time. There are five bodies, all seized by the same, endlessly repeating impulse, which is amplified by the beat of the music. They cannot stop dancing. Together they form an autonomous world with its own rules and visitors are invited to dance along.
Driven by the beat, the sequence of images changed continuously through the underlying software. But during the exhibition period, the layout of the installation in TENT also changed. Heerkens experimented with three different screen setups, to investigate their impact on the experience of the dance film.
'An Invitation to Dance' was presented in TENT on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Dance studios, to which Loic Perela as makers were connected. The presentation was concluded with a round table discussion.
