In collaboration with platform Beyond Walls, Nagila Muller, Shari Maduro and Gyonne Goedhoop will enter into a conversation with Djé-Rimo and Julia Jouwe. The focus will be on the legacies of the Dutch colonial past and the political and neo-colonial context in Indonesia today.
We talk about what it means to be part of the 'Indonesian' diaspora and to have to relate to identities that have been shaped by colonial and neo-colonial contexts. We address how skewed the representation of the colonial past is in the Netherlands, and how certain narratives were, and are, erased in the process.
How both in the colonial period and in the nation state of Indonesia, different islands and kingdoms were regrouped as “Indonesians”, and how Indonesian independence from colonial rule had completely different implications for West Papua and the Moluccas, where our guests have their roots. In this episode of 'A Tapestry of a Diaspora' we wanted to focus on their stories. They share with us how they look at these histories, and how they re-articulate what their specific diaspora and memory mean to them. It confronts us again with the complexity of the legacies of the colonial past, which can be very different for different groups and generations.
