Jay Tan makes sculptures, performances, sound and video work. In atmospheric work Tan creates – often with everyday household or DIY materials and mechanics – magical, open worlds. Decoration is a political gesture for them. Geo Wyeth moves between music, performance, installation and video. Their recent work combines performance, poetry and absurdity with techniques from investigative journalism. Referring to blues, folk, protest songs and music theatre, Wyeth wades through the mud of society.
In addition to nominees Kevin Osepa and Koes Staatsen, Wyeth and tan were also guests at Operator Radio on Thursday, July 1, the morning before the Dolf Henkes Award Ceremony, in their new studio Time is the New Space, and told Thomas Fonville about where they come from and the course of their artistic practice.
Kevin Osepa, Koes Staassen, Jay Tan and Geo Wyeth are the nominees for the Dolf Henkes Prize 2021, a biennial prize awarded to an iconic Rotterdam artist. In the afternoon, the prize was awarded to Geo Wyeth by Nathanja van Dijk. The installations of all four artists can be seen at TENT until 22 August 2021.
