Gyonne Goedhoop, Nagila Muller and Shari Maduro will talk to Imane and Berksun of KLAUW and Ibrahim Alaoui of ciMENA. The film 'The Truth Within' by Randa Nassar forms the starting point for reflections on resilience within the MENA community.
The conversation is about growing up in Rotterdam, the lack of safer spaces for young people from the various diasporas in the city and the need to create such spaces ourselves. And about the exclusion mechanisms in various European spaces that are, in subtle and not so subtle ways, marked by Islamophobic tendencies. The conversation took place a few days after the Taliban coup in Afghanistan in August 2021.
Zooming in on cultural Rotterdam, and looking at both institutional spaces and nightlife, we ask ourselves: What do spaces look like in which we feel free and secure as young people from different diasporic communities in the Netherlands? How can we determine the parameters of this ourselves? How do we relate to each other when boundaries are crossed? What privileges do the speakers recognize for themselves as second and third generation migrants compared to other young people who have recently migrated? Or compared to the generation before them?
