Frieda Free Market

Het collectief Snackbar Frieda is genomineerd voor de Dolf Henkes Prijs 2026 vanwege hun directe en praktische vorm van kunst en activisme. In een gekraakt pand in Rotterdam-West bakken zij wekelijks verse friet van aardappels die boeren na hun oogst op het land laten liggen. Juist door hun zogenaamde onprofessionele slow snackbar is er een open ontmoetingsplek in de wijk ontstaan. Frieda onderzoekt hoe voedsel, zorg en gemeenschap georganiseerd kunnen worden buiten een financiële winst logica.

Sinds hun start in februari 2025, kunnen buurtgenoten en belangstellenden elke vrijdag tussen 16.00 en 20.00 een frietje op donatie-basis halen bij Snackbar Frieda aan het Adrianaplein/Bajonetstraat.

Op vrijdag 10 april organiseert Snackbar Frieda een DIY-markt op het Adrianaplein in het Oude Westen. Deze markt kaart de tekortkomingen van het voedselsysteem aan door inventief gebruik te maken van diens restjes. Iedereen – mensen uit de buurt of daarbuiten – kan gratis groenten en fruit op komen halen, die onterecht zijn afgedankt. Gezamenlijk maken we de producten schoon en leren we je verschillende conserveringsmethoden.
Parallel werken ze aan een mini- documentaire waarin Snackbar Frieda op basis van zelfonderzoek wil delen wat ze in de praktijk hebben geleerd over zelforganisatie, solidariteit en werken zonder geld. De screening van de documentaire vindt later dit jaar plaats.

We quoten Snackbar Frieda:
“In Snackbar Frieda, we use the leftovers that society creates to expose the contradictions of this capitalist system. How is it possible that so much food goes to waste while people cannot afford groceries? How can it be more profitable to destroy vast amounts of food than to consume it?
We do not blame any of the workers in the food supply chain, from those in local marketplaces to those exploited while working the land across the world. Instead, we criticise those who profit from maintaining this destructive system, which harms people, non-human animals, and the planet.

We also want to speak to consumers. Can we rethink what we consider usable food? In most cases, the food that is thrown away is still perfectly good – removing a small bruise leaves an entirely edible vegetable. But our perceptions are shaped by the aesthetic standards imposed by supermarkets, which largely control how we access food.
Moreover, in their effort to keep shelves constantly full, they systematically over-purchase, leading to large amounts being discarded.

In Snackbar Frieda, we experiment with alternative food (re)distributions based on solidarity and self-organisation. We want to inspire others to take initiative for themselves and their neighbours.
There is an abundance of free food, and we can share tips and tricks so that more people can make use of this resource!

On 10 April, from 12:30 to 18:00 (or until the food runs out), we will set up a market at the Adrianaplein in Oude Westen, where everyone is welcome to take food for free. At 18:00, we will cook together using whatever remains, followed by a screening of the film The Gleaners and I by Agnès Varda.”
